Tips for solo traveling
While traveling solo may seem scary to some people, I have found that there are many benefits to being a party of one while roaming around the globe.
Here are some tips to make solo travel a little less intimidating:
1. Always keep an upbeat attitude – There’s no mystery to this one. You’re going to get more bees with sugar than vinegar. Every destination I’ve been to I always try to get a local person’s thoughts on where to go, and what to do in there area.
Simply having a smile on my face opens the door to conversation. If I walked around stone faced and grouchy I don’t think people would be willing to help me as much.
2. Be willing to change your plan – This tip is more of a benefit to solo travel. Before arriving at my destination I always have an idea of where I would like to go and the spots I want to see. However, I never make anything totally set in stone. Having a flexible plan allows room for last minute changes. Some of the most memorable places I visited during my solo travels were not part of my original plan, but usually just spur of the moment ideas. Opening your route up to changes will lead you to somewhere you probably never would’ve found otherwise.
3. Going with your gut feeling – This is something that develops over time, and with experience. The more you hone in on trusting your gut, better you get at it. When something drives or motivates you, move in that direction. Even if your logical mind cannot make sense of it, do everything you can to listen to what you are feeling. Following my gut led me to places and experiences far greater than what I could’ve imagined had I “stuck to the plan”. It’s also a skill that has thankfully kept me safe during all of my solo travel.
Bonus: Tuning this intuition is one of the most crucial skills I have learned from my solo travel adventures, and bringing it back to my every day life has made me a far more easygoing, enlightened individual
4. Let go of all self doubt – Have faith in the fact that there are so many beautiful things around you! If you’re thinking about going on that backpacking trip through Europe or taking a dive trip to the Maldives; stop thinking, book your plane ticket, and get going now!!
