Traveling can be a seemingly endless array of caloric temptations, coupled with the stress of breaking from the usual routine, and a “I’m on vacation, so the calories don’t count” mindset. These factors can make that great little dress for your night out in a new city quickly become a sausage casing. Don’t fret, here’s some tips to help you stay healthy, and still order dessert while roaming the globe.
Walk, take the stairs, pace, fidget, do anything you can to stay in constant motion. There is a lot of idle time spent especially when traveling to, and coming from, a destination. What I like to call; “hurry up, and wait” segment of your trip. Instead of using this time gaining levels in candy crush, do what ever you can to keep your muscles moving. Also, Try to experience as many new things as possible! Exposing yourself to unfamiliar sensations stimulates the brain to create new neural pathways. Your brain actually burns more calories during this process, than it does doing repetitive daily tasks.
Pack vitamins and green supplements
This will drastically reduce cravings for sugar and snacks. These supplements are additionally useful to boost your immune system for the 10 hour flight next to your runny nosed neighbor. My favorite meal supplement to pack is Amazing Meal in Chocolate.
Go easy on the alcohol
Limiting alcohol consumption while traveling is good practice not only with regard to your waistline but also to your bottom line. Ordering drinks will add a significant cost to your travel budget. By skipping the beer with your burger you can put that extra money towards taking a guided trip through the local brewery.
Another obvious reason for not over indulging on alcohol is to not become an easy target. Being in a unfamiliar a location you want to try to maintain awareness of your surroundings. If you’re the girl standing on the bar singing “insert common drunk girl song here” you may be getting some unwelcome and unwanted attention. In any new location It’s best to keep a clear head, which also keeps off the extra pounds.
There are a multitude of Positive benefits to staying hydrated I think the most significant benefit is the increase in energy levels experienced. Having the extra energy will allow you to get the most out of the time you have in your new destination.
Drinking plenty of water will keep your body in a balanced state, making it easy to walk right on by the Cinnabon (which may have been calling to you from 3 airport terminals over).
Often times your brain can get confused when it is lacking something, and immediately we’ll go for the sugar or caffeine fix, causing further dehydration. Extra H2O also helps the digestive process. So if you do overindulge in something, your body can break down the extra calories more effectively. Keeping a water bottle with you is always a helpful reminder to get in as much water as you can.
Experiencing a new region wouldn’t be complete without eating, experiencing different flavors, ingredients, spices, and ways of food preparation. It is all part of sampling the culture of an area.
Eating has been a social activity since the dawn of time. Not including this as part of your travels would be shorting yourself. The stress you’re causing yourself over the piece of pie you ordered, only makes you feel guilty. Don’t take away from the very experience that you’re traveling for. So order that pie, and enjoy every bite of it! Just don’t forget to get a workout in tomorrow morning!
